A Tarot Spread for Introspection

These tarot card prompts and tips can help you use divination as a tool for introspection. All spiritual practices should be used to empower and improve those who use them. For this reason, one should remember to use tarot as a flexible guide to explorative thinking, not a premonition of inescapable fate. For example, should you pull the Death card, do not jump to assume you or someone you know will drop dead in a matter of moments. Instead, consider other interpretations: will you quit your job, are you missing an old friend, have you not mourned a loss in the past?  There is no wrong way to do tarot, but it can intimidating to start out on your own and fun to try a new spread even if you are an expert. It can be helpful to spend a few moments connecting with your breath and meditating before a tarot reading. Once you are in a calm and receptive state, you may choose to set your intention. An intention can be very broad or rather specific. Shuffle your deck how ever you choose. Ta...

Plants have the power to change our moods, health, and appreciation for life. Their potential and importance have always been demonstrated and celebrated in religion through scripture, rituals, and ceremonies. However, reasons for worshiping plants transcend spiritual practice. In fact, research by the Mental Health Foundation shows nearly half of all UK residents testify to reduced stress levels after spending time in nature. They also report that taking special care to notice one’s surroundings is an essential step in connecting with nature and reaping major mental health benefits. It may be hard for one to access quality green space, but taking extra time to closely observe plants and explore their fascinating histories can help people feel more connected to nature.  Plants that we eat, use in medicine, and use in special ceremonies have symbolic significance that can help one find beauty in and reverence for everything they encounter. Important plants in Islam: The Olive Tree ...

Five Ways to Meditate

Meditation has been used as a spiritual staple for thousands of years in almost every religion. Because it has origins in India, China, and Africa; dozens of different forms of the practice exist; and the physical and mental effects are still being studied, it can be difficult to define. However, the fluid, playful, and varied nature of the practice makes it tailorable to any person or situation! These five methods of meditation pull heavily from Buddhism and Taoism but also incorporate some Western concepts that are geared toward health and wellbeing rather than spirituality.

Intro to Crystals

Exploring the rich, ever expanding world within and outside of yourself is incredibly rewarding. Even if you do not believe in the transformational powers of crystals, thinking about their supposed metaphysical  properties in relation to your life or applying your own associations can aid you in meditation, journalling, or moments of introspection. Overall, finding and appreciating beauty in the small things can make you a more joyous, grateful, and curious person! Rutilated Quartz, also called Venus’ hair stone, can be found all over the world. It is formed through a hydrothermal process which results in highly refractive, thin shots of the golden mineral called rutile trapped inside quartz. Metaphysically, it is said to amplify and encourage inner strength, originality, and forgiveness. It is a gentle but powerful stone that can be used to help clear negative energy related to feelings of loneliness, fear, anxiety, or poor self esteem. Though Rutilated quartz can effectively clea...

About the Author: Raised Outside Religion

I have always had pride in my unique religious upbringing. When I was young, my parents did not tell my sisters and I what religion they practiced, if any. We knew they had both grown up in the Catholic Church and did not go anymore. The only exception was that my Dad occasionally went to Christmas Mass (though I would later learn it was just because "church acoustics are sick" and it reminded him of his grandmother). Generally speaking, our parents encouraged us to explore freely and carefully form our own opinions. They suggested trying out church with our friends after Saturday night sleepovers, reading about world religions, trying meditation, and above all else remaining curious.  My religious Journey went something like this... 0-4 years old: Not capable of having thoughts/believed in reincarnation without knowledge of Buddhism; really freaked out my mom when I asked who I'd get to be after I died 4-7 years old: staunch atheist; got in trouble in kindergarten for te...
